at 4 AM saw a Sail to the Southw^d: gave Chace ½ past carried away the Larb^d. Fore Topm^st. Steering Sail Boom & sprung the Starb^d. Main D^o: at 5 thick fogg Shorten'd Sail at 10 Cape Ann West 7 or 8 Leag^s. 

Cape Ann W¼N 8 or 9 Leag^s:

First Parts Mod^e. Intermix'd with thick foggs, Middle & latter Mod^e. & Clear at 1 PM Saw the Chace Standing in for Cape Ann, Bear^g E½S^o. Fir'd 2 twelve P^rs: at her. ½ past heard the Report of Several Guns to the Westw^d. and saw 2 Sail bearing W½N at 2 Cape Ann WBS^o 7 L^gs. lost Sight of the Chace at 4 TK^d Cape Ann W½S^o. 6 L^gs. at 5 Saw the Chace bearing SEbE^t: at 8 came up with her she prov'd a French Brigg¹ from Guadaloupa bound as we supposd to Boston or Marble Head, laden with Rum, Molasses, Anchors, Cables &c, D^o brot too hoisted out the Cutter, Shifted the Priseners & sent 2 petty Officers & 6 Men Onb^d her ½ past 10 Took her in Tow² & made Sail
